It was daunting, frightening, hot, a blur, exhilarating, the culmination of years of work, the beginning of years more, thrilling, exhausting, lonely, the start of a new chapter, ego smashing, a relief, rife with families … did we emphasize hot? It was Induction Day and we were there with photographers and videographers to capture the mood.

Plebe Practice Parade
It is hot hot hot out in Annapolis these days, but Plebes don’t care. They love learning how to march in air over 100 degrees. Their happy over-heated lives on Worden Field are just beginning. See their schedule here.

Quantico Course to Go Co-ed
The opening exercise in the Marine Corps’ Infantry Officer Course, one sequence in the Combat Endurance Test, is one of the most redoubtable male-only domains in the military … and it may be the last male-only class. Beginning this fall, female officer volunteers will participate as part of a study to gauge the feasibility of allowing female Marines to serve in more extensive combat roles.

Another Record Broken
Midshipman Helena Cheslack ’16, daughter of Captain Virginia “Randy” Kurtz ’82, USN, is one of 295 female plebes, a record 24 percent of the entering Class of 2016. She and her classmates arrived ready for the toughest summer of their lives. They spoke matter-of-factly to the Baltimore Sun newspaper about the increasing gender equity of the Brigade.

Academy Boats in 2012 Newport-Bermuda Race
They all aggressively finished in the top three of their divisions this year (Invictus, Swift and Defiance), even after a rough delivery up to Newport. In the 1930s when the Academy first began participating, few were pleased, mostly due to the reputation of yachtsmen: “… after the conclusion of such a race, a rousing celebration usually takes place in Bermuda and the yachtsmen endeavor to forget the hardships of the voyage.”

Summer STEM Video
Each year the Summer STEM program brings rising 8th through 11th graders from across the country for a week of hands-on learning at the Naval Academy The Naval Academy STEM program focuses on four areas: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students enrolled in the program have the chance to interact with midshipmen and instructors in the Academy's world-class lab facilities.
