DoD Celebrates Women’s History Month
From history and traditions to personal stories and current news and profiles, the Department of Defense is recognizing Women’s History Month with a wealth of info and great stories.

SWIFT-moving Weather
The Oceanography Department created a new field activity in 2010 named SWIFT (Severe Weather In-Field Training), which in this age of frequent fast moving and highly destructive weather came not a moment too soon. Midshipmen have become storm chasers. Download an article by two professors about the SWIFT program and its importance to the Academy. It’s STEM in action.

Brigade Boxing Champ: Nathan Jester
Midshipman Nate Jester ’12 won the heavyweight title at the 71st Annual Brigade Boxing Championships in Annapolis on 24 February. Here’s a video about who he is and where he finds his strength and discipline inside the ring.

Wayback Machine: 1974 Video
It was only in 1972 that women were first assigned to the crew of a ship, the USS Sanctuary. This 1974 video, complete with a great interview with CAPT Joy Bright Hancock, goes a bit further back to WWI’s Yeomanettes and WWII’s WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), who first trained female naval officers at Smith College.

Leaders Lead Video: “The Admiral”
During a visit to Carver Academy in San Antonio, TX, Byron Marchant ’78 sat down with Superintendent VADM Michael H. Miller ’74, USN, and Naval Academy alumnus and professional basketball player David Robinson ’87 to talk about the Academy, the physical mission, the importance of philanthropic support and how Robinson received the nickname “Admiral.”

Professor Joins Conversation About Afghanistan
“Recent events in Afghanistan are challenging core assumptions of U.S. strategy … the Obama administration has planned to wind down US involvement ... whether the Afghans and Americans can even trust each other is now being questioned.” Dr. John Nagl from the USNA History Department took part in this NPR interview. Spring is Here – Play Ball!
Paul Kostacopoulos recently began his seventh season as Navy’s baseball coach, and already Coach “Kosti” has spoiled Navy fans. He entered the 2012 season with 182 victories and five 30-win seasons at the school and 686 wins overall. Sports writer Gary Lambrecht recently sat down with him for a Q&A.

17 Flag Officers Nominated for Second Star
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the names of 17 rear admirals who have been nominated for a second star on 13 March 2012. Of those 17 nominated, 10 are Naval Academy graduates! Bravo Zulu alumni!

USS ENTERPRISE Leaves for Final Deployment
On 11 March 2012 at 11:50 am, the oldest and largest active warship in the Navy, and one of the most recognizable ships ever built, USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) shoved off from Norfolk Naval Base Pier12 for its final voyage. XO is CAPT Gregory Huffman ’89, USN. Thank you for your 50+ years of service!

Dream Dinner at the White House
Our Parent Listserve moderator, Elaine Brye (mother of three grads), sent a Christmas card to the White House, which later landed her a seat at the First Family’s head table for their recent dinner in honor of the British Prime Minister. We have the guest list and seating chart right here, complete with a Clooney and some Buffetts.
